This project consists of a new approximately 85,000 sq. ft. recreational facility that will replace the Canada Colleges existing Gymnasium facility constructed in the 1960s. This $57 million new state of the art facility merges the academic needs of the Colleges Sports Programs as well as providing a Community Gym (by membership) Facility designed to serve approximately 2,500 residents of the surrounding community. The design of the new facility has been integrated into the sloped hillside to lower the height (from the current gym) and take advantage of the dramatic views of the surrounding hills around the College.
Sustainability has been woven into the nearly all glass facility opening up views from inside the athletic center bringing the outdoors inside allowing the users to experience their physical fitness while viewing out to the outdoor aquatics center or the surrounding hillsides. The placement of the basketball courts on the lower level allows 2-story volume spaces to be viewed during workouts. The lower level directly connects the locker rooms to the outdoor aquatics center which consists of (2) 25 meter by 30 yard pools (one competitive pool, one warm up pool).
